Agmatine is technically considered a metabolic byproduct of Arginine production. Through a complex process known as decarboxylation, Arginine converts to polyamines mainly Spermine, Spermidine, Cadaverine, Putrescine and Agmatine which all have proven to support cell growth and muscle regeneration. The interesting part of Agmatine is that it is synthesized and stored in astrocytes (glial cells which are found in the spinal cord), which makes it neuro-protective, in other words, providing metabolic support to the working nervous system, especially during high intensity interval training. Agmatine also may act as a secondary neurotransmitter which might explain its healthy support of LH production (via LHRH) in humans.
